A note: Andy’s Frozen Custard did not pay me for this open letter, I just very much like this particular menu option from Andy’s.

Dear “Words Can’t Describe It” Apple Pie Sundae with Roasted Pecans from Andy’s Frozen Custard,

Yesterday was rough. This past week, accidentally forgetting a couple of doses of my morning medication until later in the day caused some turbulence in terms of the side effects I experienced. Among my various symptoms, some of the worst were sleep related: trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, trouble staying awake during the day. Consistently grabbing the short end of the stick in terms of possible side effects was like a wash of discomfort, frustration, sadness, and longing that I was soaking in.

As…

Film Poster from A24

Consider lemon za’atar hummus. It’s familiar, being that it’s hummus, yet strange and fresh. When you put it in your mouth, you’re confused. Why does this hummus taste so different? Is it the lemon? Is it the za’atar? Really, it’s hard to pinpoint. Those unique ingredients are definitely there, but something else is what makes lemon za’atar hummus stand out. For the hummus, the choices about the inclusion of the ingredients have been well thought out to augment an already amazing product.

In The Lighthouse, director Robert Eggers works in very much the same way. The surprisingly captivating story of…

Full disclosure, I did get a press ticket and entrance into the photo bay in exchange for writing this article.

This past Thursday, Jim Gaffigan presented new material for an audience of thousands at State Farm Center. Champaign was the latest stop in Gaffigan’s Secrets and Pies tour. While there wasn’t any mention of secrets or pies, the stand-up comedian went over extremely well with the crowd and never failed to keep laughter from stopping.

Opener Ted Alexandro told lots of jokes about being old, something that got a better reception than I anticipated. It was then, in the opening…

Doja Cat and her fans

The first time I heard of Doja Cat, I was laying down in bed at a Japanese capsule hotel in mid-August of 2018. Scrolling through my Twitter timeline I saw tweet. “Bitch I’m a Cow?”, I asked myself. “What is this ‘Bitch I’m a Cow’?” I did some internet research and discovered Doja Cat’s “Mooo!” and immediately decided it was a 100% bop. Thus, my appreciation of Doja Cat began. Walking through the streets of Kyoto the next day, “Mooo!” was my soundtrack and nothing could stop me from playing the SoundCloud rip of the video on repeat.

I heard…

The Data Waves at their Pygmalion set

Three of the members of the funky, groovy, local band The Data Waves sat down with Pizza FM the day before their Pygmalion set. We talked about their music at length.

Interviewer: First of all, I want to congratulate you on being in the Pygmalion lineup. I’m going to see you tomorrow and I’m excited to see you live again. First thing: In your bio that I found in a few places around the internet, I saw that you guys as a group got your start in 2016 at U of I, but I know that you weren’t always the…

Local music festival Pygmalion is approaching, with another strong and exciting lineup for Illini and CU-area natives alike.

Headlining the musical acts of the festival is Atlanta rapper J.I.D, who has been on tour since releasing latest album, Dicaprio 2. The organizers of Pygmalion are certainly in tune with U of I students as this headliner is one of the most anticipated performances of Pygmalion 2019. Also featured on the lineup Chicago-based rapper IsaiahG.

In addition to the aforementioned rappers, there are six other solo acts at the festival. Excitement is brewing for Japanese Breakfast, the solo musical project by…

While Pygmalion may be known amongst Illini as a music festival, this year’s lineup features an impressive group of non-musicians alongside musical acts. There are three non-music categories to this year’s Pygmalion lineup (Think, Made, and Lit), each intriguing in their own right.

Headlining the festival is comedian Eric Andre, of The Eric Andre Show fame. Recently appearing in The Lion King (2019), Eric Andre is sure to draw college-age crowds at the Canopy Club that enjoy his particular sense of humor. Michelle Wolf, former Daily Show and Late Night writer as well as White House Correspondents Dinner headliner, is…

This past week, Los Dells announced their lineup for their third annual festival in Mauston, Wisconsin. Diverse in genre, the artists in the Los Dells 2019 lineup continue the welcoming stance of the festival by hosting artists that appeal to different musical interests, age groups, and nationalities. Let’s dive into the headliners!

Headliners

There are four headliners for this year’s festival, the same number as the 2018 lineup. Comparatively, the makeup of these main stage performers is slightly different from that of last year (Bad Bunny, Flo Rida, Wisin y Yandel, and Banda MS).

For one, the only rapper left is…

On Labor Day weekend of 2018, I drove up with my mom to a music festival in Wisconsin. Going with one of your parents to a multi-day music festival instead of with friends would normally be a little strange, but this was different. …

About a year ago, I was scrolling through my Twitter feed when an article of interest appeared suddenly. It was about Los Dells, a newly formed Latin music festival. I had always wanted to go to Lollapalooza and Pitchfork someday, but Los Dells caught my music festival eye in a different sort of way. All my life, I kept tabs on Latin artists. From repeating tracks off of Shakira’s Laundry Service in my basement at four years old to intently listening to Latin Pop radio in the backseat of a minivan, música Latina was something I enjoyed from a young age. The problem was that no one outside of family that I knew played that sort of music.

Talk to any Midwesterner, and chances are, they’ve heard of the Wisconsin Dells. It boasts some of the States’ best waterparks, facilities for family-friendly fun, and an extensive ensemble of hotels. The Dells are the place to be if you’re a pre-teen looking for a fun destination spring break. Compared to the immense presence of the Wisconsin Dells, Los Dells is relatively unknown. My colleagues, friends, and family alike were unaware of the festival’s existence. …
